Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday was celebrated on Monday January 15th. You might have missed it if you were reading my favorite national newspaper: The New York Times. Its front-page story and photo was about the pastor of a 60-member Pentacostal church in Harlem. While the pastor's mission and the Times' coverage are admirable, couldn't that story have waited a few days? Granted, the Times did run front-page coverage the day AFTER.

I don't know about you but I'd feel at least a little slighted if you purposely gave me my birthday card a day late. Maybe it was just an oversight on my part but I didn't see much television coverage either. Mohammed Ali turning 65 in the same week received at least a dozen hours of television coverage over three days and plenty of print coverage.

Don't get me wrong; both men deserve to be honored for their courage and service to their race and to the human race in general. So, I'm not complaining about Ali (in fact I'm a BIG fan). I'm not even doubting The New York Time's dedication and respect for Dr. King and for all races. But, in light of Monday's muted coverage and things like Arizona refusing to honor such a seminal leader, it just makes me wonder about our nation's values system.

In the meantime, to Dr. King, his family, and our black fellow Americans, I add another, heartfelt, "Thank-you and Happy Birthday, Dr. King." Tell me what you think.
