I was an Artillery officer during the Viet Nam conflict. As a young, inexperienced, man I thought it my patriotic duty to "fight for my country" only to find out that our engagement in Viet Nam was a cynical ploy by the military-industrial complex to profit from a non-existent communist threat. Chief architect, Robert McNamara has since publicly admitted this.

Thus, I thought/hoped that the greatest and wisest nation on earth would not permit such a tragic repeat. I was wrong and now another young lieutenant, Lt. Ehren Watada, a West Point grad, is doing what thousands of other soldiers and I should have done.

To our Congress, I implore you to get us out of the Middle East and stop sending our soldiers into a deadly no-win lie that has devolved into a civil war. Let those who are wise and courageous enough to question authority, and to stand up for freedom and what America is supposed to be about, do so. I doubt whether any of us would have called the men, who rebelled against Hitler's orchestrated campaign of lies, "cowards" or "deserters."

You are forcing the policy of two lying draft dodgers onto an innocent American military that does not have the luxury of fighting from the safety of Washington, DC or even the rear staging area from where our generals push our fine young men and women into the meat grinder of the Middle East. Do what you quasi-promised you would do leading up to last November's watershed elections.
