As jaded as I am about George W. Bush and the course that he and his "2,000 rich white donors" have America on, I grudgingly tuned in to last night's State of the Union and witnessed one of the finest, clearest, speeches and displays of leadership that our great nation has ever enjoyed. In a moment I'll get to the president's speech as well but, first, how about Senator James Webb! His closing line about the economic imbalance in this country and Iraq said it all:

"As I look at Iraq, I recall the words of former general and soon-to-be President Dwight Eisenhower during the dark days of the Korean War, which had fallen into a bloody stalemate. "When comes the end?" asked the General who had commanded our forces in Europe during World War Two. And as soon as he became President, he brought the Korean War to an end.

These Presidents took the right kind of action, for the benefit of the American people and for the health of our relations around the world. Tonight we are calling on this President to take similar action, in both areas. If he does, we will join him. If he does not, we will be showing him the way."

The Bush speech was somber, tepid and obdurate as ever. Weak promises ("hints" or "suggestions" are probably better descriptions) about important issues made him seem like a runner on his old major league team just wanting to run fast, touch the bases and get the hell out of there. I won't waste your time commenting on the litany of important subjects (like Social Security, Education, the Economy, Human Rights, etc.) that have languished for the past 6 years. Instead I'll just pull one out of my never-worn-backward baseball cap: Alternative fuels.

Our oil and agricultural lobby-influenced president and Congress continue to bumble about the relative merits of corn or sugar ethanol -- either one of which will eventually lead to a shortage of food (plant and animal) and massive price increases as our 211 million autos vie for them. Meanwhile our Draft Dodger-in-Chief is priming us to spend another Trillion dollars on an Iraq that will return to utter chaos within months of us departing. Instead of subsidizing sugar or corn or switchgrass growers, instead of spending lives and literally TRILLIONS of dollars in Iraq, how about applying that money to press real hard on the "hydrogen research gas pedal?" If we could put a man on the moon in a decade, and build an atomic bomb in 3 short years, think of what we could do with the more than $300 million a day, that Washington-based economist Scott Wallsten estimates we are spending in Iraq (David Leonhardt, The New York Times January 17, 2007 "What $1.2 Trillion Can Buy").

I realize this would require us to stop funding a civil war in a country that hates us and wants us out, but doesn't clean air; energy independence from some pretty hairy places; no more dead or maimed soldiers; and a chance to get peace from honest discussion as described in my book, ResoNation, sound better to you?

Tell me what you think.
